Lunar Client is a free-to-use Minecraft launcher and client modification developed by Moonsworth LLC, released in 2019. It adds cosmetic items, performance mods and various mods to enhance Minecraft gameplay.
Consumer impact summary

[edit | edit source]Lunar Client's privacy policy discloses that they collect: IP addresses, user agents, timestamps, precise/imprecise geolocation, sensor data, apps, fonts, battery life and screen size. It states that they and their partners use web beacons and tracking pixels installed in their mobile or online applications to identify users that visit their services. [1] They mention Google analytics as one of the third parties they use. Their privacy policy states that they reserve the right to change the policy at any time at their sole discretion.
User freedom
[edit | edit source]The Terms of Service grant Moonsworth a perpetual, irrevocable, sublicensable license over User Generated Content uploaded to its services and prohibit reverse engineering and independent modification of the client. [2] There is a misconception that this applies to media made using Lunar Client such as Youtube videos, it only applies to content directly uploaded to the platform directly.
Monetization tactics
[edit | edit source]Lunar Client's Gift Gauntlet and Vault Sale events use Fear of missing out to drive spending, real-money gifts convert to points toward a leaderboard and exclusive rewards unavailable outside the event window. [3]
Lunar Client introduced a virtual currency system for purchasing cosmetics. Critics argue that virtual currencies can reduce price transparency by adding an additional conversion step between real-world money and digital goods, making it harder for consumers to immediately assess the actual cost of an item. [4]
Its Coins system is made up of a non-refundable virtual currency which offers a stacking purchase discount. This shares characteristics associated with the manipulation aspect of predatory microtransactions, particularly through the use of virtual currency systems that can obscure the real-world cost of purchases.[5]
Market control
[edit | edit source]Moonsworth owns both Lunar Client and Badlion Client, which it describes as having a combined user base of over 3 million monthy users combined.[6] This acquisition raised market consolidation concerns among some users, arguing that this could reduce competition between major Minecraft clients. [7]
Incidents
[edit | edit source]Lunar Client data collection allegations (August 2026)
[edit | edit source]YouTuber Dounutz published a video accusing Lunar Client of harvesting far more personal data than users would expect; claiming ownership over user-generated content and acquiring Badlion Client specifically to eliminate its main competitor. The video illustrates its claims using dramatized imagery. It depicts the Lunar Client logo shown covered in blood and screaming-child audio used as a transition effect. [8]
Dounutz's claim, including the "browsing history" and "permanently binding" claims rely on interpretations of Lunar Client's Privacy Policy that exaggerate what the policy's text actually is stating. The policy states that data is retained for up to 5 years and browsing history is in the application only.
Company and third-party response (September 2026)
[edit | edit source]Lunar Client denied the allegations in a statement on their Discord server, stating that it does not secretly collect or sell personal information, spy on users or exploit users and that the practices discussed are standard across the gaming and technology industry. However, Lunar's own Privacy Policy explicitly discloses its data collection and targeted advertising practices, the controversy primarily concerned the scope and implications of these practices rather than whether they were secretly conducted.
Age requirement discrepancy
[edit | edit source]Lunar's Privacy Policy states that users must be at least 13 (or 16 in some jurisdictions) to use the Services. Its Terms of Service allows minors to use the Services with authorization from a legal guardian. [1][2]
However the launcher's installation process requires every user to confirm that they are 18 or older before proceeding. There does not appear to be a separate installation path for a minor who is otherwise eligible to use Lunar under the Terms with parental authorization.
This creates a discrepancy between Lunar's written policies and its actual installation process. A 14 year old may be permitted to use the Services under the Terms with parental authorization, but the launcher requires them to make an 18+ declaration to install the client.
Lunar does not appear to explain in its Terms or Privacy Policy why an 18+ declaration is required during installation when its own Terms explicitly contemplate minors being permitted to use the Services.
