NBA 2K25 server shutdown

From Consumer Rights Wiki
2K's notice "NBA 2K25: Server Sunset", published September 3, 2026 and updated October 2, 2026, says that as of January 1, 2027 MyCAREER and MyTEAM "will no longer be available".[1]

The publisher 2K will stop selling its NBA video game NBA 2K25 as of October 30, 2026, & on January 1, 2027 will end the game's online play & shut down MyCAREER, where players create their own player, & MyTEAM, which 2K calls "the ultimate card-collecting experience".[2][1][3] Players spend Virtual Currency (VC) that can be bought with real money in those two modes, which close that day along with the ability to earn VC, though owners will still be able to redownload the game & play its offline modes.[4][1]

A copy of 2K's online services status page updated September 11, 2024 listed the game's online features & services as "scheduled to be available until 31 December 2026".[5] On October 15, 2026, Representative Ritchie Torres announced that he would introduce a bill on game ownership, the Power To The Players Act, & his press release called NBA 2K25 "a clear example".[6]

Release and publisher

[edit | edit source]

Visual Concepts, "a 2K studio", developed NBA 2K25, & 2K, "a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc.", announced on September 6, 2024 that the game was "now available worldwide" on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch & PC.[2] In its July 10, 2024 announcement of the editions, 2K said the Standard Edition would be available for $69.99 ($59.99 on Nintendo Switch) & the All-Star Edition for $99.99, prices based on "2K’s suggested retail price" that it said "may vary" at retail.[7]

2K's support page for NBA 2K says players "can earn" VC "throughout the various game modes" & that they "are also able to spend real money on VC" to get "this in-game currency at a faster rate",[4] & the All-Star Edition "includes 100,000 VC and MyTEAM content".[7]

2K's launch release called NBA 2K25 "the latest iteration" of an "NBA video game simulation series";[2] the video game news site Insider Gaming wrote that NBA 2K26 "carries on the annual release cycle",[8] & 2K announced on September 4, 2026 that NBA 2K27, the latest entry in "the NBA video game franchise developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K", was "now available worldwide".[9]

Shutdown of MyCAREER, MyTEAM and online modes

[edit | edit source]

2K announced the shutdown in a notice titled "NBA 2K25: Server Sunset" on its NBA 2K Support site, dated September 3, 2026 & updated October 2, 2026.[1] The notice says the game will "no longer be available for purchase as of October 30, 2026" & will "be discontinued as of December 31, 2026".[1] As of January 1, 2027, according to the notice, players will no longer be able to "play multiplayer games or access any online game modes", MyCAREER & MyTEAM "will no longer be available", & it "will no longer be possible to earn Virtual Currency (VC)".[1]

2K's "2K Online Services Status" page says that where a title's online services are no longer available, "the game and/or certain features may still be playable offline", but "any online features will no longer be available".[10] The page, first published September 4, 2024 & updated September 14, 2026, lists NBA 2K25's online features & services as "scheduled to be available until 31 December 2026".[10] An archived copy of the page carrying the header "UPDATED: September 11, 2024" gave NBA 2K25 the same scheduled end date, 31 December 2026.[5]

A game that is delisted from a digital marketplace can no longer be bought from that marketplace, as the technology site Digital Trends explains.[11] NBA 2K25's listings on Steam, the Xbox store, the PlayStation Store & Nintendo's store each say "This product will no longer be available for purchase as of 10/30/2026" & "All multiplayer servers for NBA 2K25 will be shutdown as of 12/31/2026".[12][13][14][15] Each of the four listings adds: "After that time, all game functions requiring online servers will no longer function."[12][13][14][15]

Modes after January 1, 2027

[edit | edit source]
Mode What it is Single-player or online, in each source's words After the shutdown
MyCAREER Players create their own player with the game's MyPLAYER Builder,[3] & then, in 2K's words, "build your Dynasty".[16] The video game industry news site GamesIndustry.biz calls MyCareer "the game's single-player story mode";[17] MyCAREER is not in the offline list of the Steam, Xbox or Nintendo Switch listing.[12][13][15] 2K's notice says MyCAREER "will no longer be available".[1]
MyTEAM 2K calls MyTEAM "the ultimate card-collecting experience";[3] players "assemble an elite lineup".[16] MyTEAM is not in the offline list of the Steam, Xbox or Nintendo Switch listing.[12][13][15] 2K's notice says MyTEAM "will no longer be available".[1]
MyTEAM mobile app A phone app, listed on the App Store as "NBA 2K25 MyTEAM", that in 2K's description connects a player's PlayStation or Xbox account with their phone "to sync your progress".[18] The App Store listing says the app "Requires internet connection".[18] 2K's status page schedules online features & services for MyTEAM Mobile 2K25 "to be available until 31 December 2026" & lists its offline modes as "None";[10] the App Store listing says the app "will no longer be available as of 10/30/2026";[18] Dexerto, an esports & gaming news site, reported that the app "is scheduled to go offline on the same day" that MyCareer & MyTeam end, January 1, 2027.[19]
Play Now Players control their favorite NBA & Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) teams.[3] The Steam, Xbox & Nintendo Switch listings each name Play Now as available offline.[12][13][15] 2K's notice says players "will still be able to enjoy" Play Now.[1]
MyNBA and MyGM Players build a dynasty "from the ground up as a General Manager" in MyNBA[3] & "take on the mantle of an NBA team's General Manager" in MyGM;[16] 2K's patch notes also name MyNBA Online.[20] MyNBA is in the offline lists of the Steam & Xbox listings,[12][13] & the Xbox & Nintendo Switch listings also name MyLEAGUE as available offline;[13][15] the Xbox listing offers "MyNBA and The W on Xbox Series X|S or MyLEAGUE on Xbox One".[13] 2K's notice says players "will still be able to enjoy" MyNBA, while "Online Leagues" are among the features that will be unavailable.[1]
The W 2K describes the mode with the line "Lead the next generation of WNBA stars";[3] 2K's game page also names The W Online, where players "take on world-class talent".[21] The Steam & Xbox listings each name The W as available offline.[12][13] 2K's notice says players "will still be able to enjoy" The W.[1]
MyWNBA A mode 2K's notice names among those that remain.[1] 2K's status page lists MyWNBA among the game's offline modes.[10] 2K's notice says players "will still be able to enjoy" MyWNBA.[1]
The City and its venues 2K describes The City (New Gen) as a place to "hit the park for some competitive streetball fun and compete at various new venues";[21] 2K's July 10, 2024 release places the game's "New-Gen version" "on PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S and, new for this year, on PC";[7] 2K's guide to The City names Proving Grounds, The REC, Theater, Pro-Am, Starting 5 & Ante-Up.[22] 2K calls Gravity Ball, an add-on downloaded at a building in The City (New Gen), "a fast-paced online multiplayer experience";[21] Proving Grounds is "the go-to for ranked play".[22] The notice does not name The City; it says players will no longer be able to "play multiplayer games or access any online game modes".[1]
Multiplayer, Online Leagues and community sharing Server features named in 2K's notice.[1] They "require a connection to 2K servers", the notice says.[1] 2K's notice says they "will be unavailable".[1]

2K's game page lists MyNBA & The W "on PS5®, Xbox Series X|S, and PC".[21]

MyCAREER progression and VC

[edit | edit source]

2K's support page for NBA 2K says VC can be earned in "several ways", including "playing online matches or progressing through the MyCAREER mode when you're connected to the internet".[4] The same page says players "must be connected to the internet" for VC or MyTEAM Points, a second in-game currency that can be spent only in MyTEAM, to be accrued.[4] 2K's press release announcing the game's editions stated:

Internet connection and online Account (minimum age varies) required to access online features and redeem and use bonus content, including MyCAREER, MyTEAM, MyNBA, The W Online, and Play Now Online.

[7]

The video game news site Video Games Chronicle (VGC) wrote that players "will no longer be able to earn Virtual Currency (VC) and as a result" MyTeam & MyCareer "will no longer work from that date".[23] VGC added that modes like MyCareer "would usually be expected to remain playable when online servers shut down for a game", but that "the player's progression is tied to the VC premium currency", which "means when that shuts down, the career mode shuts down too".[23] Dexerto wrote that MyCareer is "affected most directly" because attribute upgrades & VC "both run through 2K's servers", so the mode "won't load once 2K severs the connection".[19]

Redownloads and offline play

[edit | edit source]

Players who already own the game "will still be able to redownload and play offline modes", according to 2K's notice.[1] 2K's general support page on NBA 2K server sunsets says the same for owners of older NBA 2K games.[24] 2K's status page lists NBA 2K25's offline modes as "Play Now, MyNBA/MyLeague/MyGM, 2KU/Learn 2K, MyWNBA and the W".[10] In the archived copy updated September 11, 2024, the list read "Play Now, MyNBA, MyWNBA, The W, Learn 2K".[5]

Spending on the game and VC

[edit | edit source]

Editions and VC packs

[edit | edit source]

2K's July 10, 2024 announcement said NBA 2K25 "will offer four editions of the game in various digital and physical formats".[7] Besides its Standard Edition and its All-Star Edition, it listed a WNBA Edition, "a GameStop exclusive", that would be available at a suggested retail price of $69.99 "on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and only available in North America (physical only)".[7] 2K's frequently asked questions page for the game says those physical copies can be bought "exclusively in the United States and Canada at GameStop".[25] The release also listed a "limited availability" Hall of Fame Edition that would be offered through September 8 at a suggested retail price of $149.99 "on PS5 & PS4, Xbox Series X|S & Xbox One, and PC".[7] 2K's "Edition Frequently Asked Questions" page lists the Hall of Fame Edition as "Digital Only" and "On sale through September 8, 2024", with "100,000 Virtual Currency" among its contents, the same amount it lists for the All-Star Edition.[26] The same page lists a digital-only Tournament Edition, "Introduced on October 28, 2024", with "35,000 Virtual Currency".[26]

In a September 4, 2024 guide, the gaming site Dot Esports listed VC packs for NBA 2K25 in US dollars from 5,000 VC for $1.99 to 700,000 VC for $149.99, including 35,000 VC for $9.99 & 75,000 VC for $19.99.[27] Microsoft's Xbox store listings for the "NBA 2K25 35,000 Virtual Currency Pack" & the 75,000 VC pack each say: "This product will no longer be available for purchase as of 10/30/2026."[28][29]

2K's support page for NBA 2K says VC is spent in the game store on items such as MyPLAYER attributes, uniforms, equipment, apparel & animation packages, & in MyTEAM on opening packs.[4] 2K's page on moving VC between years says players "cannot move VC between versions" of NBA 2K, including between entries in the series such as NBA 2K26 & NBA 2K27.[30] In a report on the delisting, Joelle Daniels of the gaming news site GamingBolt wrote that the site had criticized the game's "aggressive and shady monetization that could often be considered blatantly pay-to-win" when it was released.[31]

Sales and Take-Two revenue

[edit | edit source]

On January 23, 2025, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), a US video game industry group, reported 2024 US consumer spending on video games.[32] Its "Console & PC Full Game – Top Grossing" table of the top games in the United States in 2024 ranked NBA 2K25 fifth, with a footnote on that entry reading "Oct-Dec digital sales not included".[32]

Take-Two's February 6, 2025 results release says recurrent consumer spending "is generated from ongoing consumer engagement" & "includes virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases and in-game advertising".[33] In prepared remarks for Take-Two's conference call on its fourth quarter & fiscal year 2025, which ended March 31, 2025, chairman & chief executive officer Strauss Zelnick listed among the "highlights from the quarter" that for NBA 2K25 "Engagement grew significantly": daily active users rose 30%, MyCAREER daily players 40% & average games per user 80%.[34] Take-Two's May 21, 2026 results release listed NBA 2K26 & NBA 2K25 among the largest contributors to its net revenue under U.S. generally accepted accounting principles in the fiscal fourth quarter ended March 31, 2026.[35]

Take-Two's terms for virtual items

[edit | edit source]

Steam's NBA 2K25 listing says it "Requires agreement to a 3rd-party EULA" and links that agreement as "NBA 2K25 EULA",[12] which opens Take-Two's terms of service, "Last Updated: January 29, 2024".[36] Those terms define "Virtual Items" as "any virtual currency, goods, items, boosts, or effects", and say the Services (Take-Two's "games, apps, products, websites, and other services"), Virtual Items & a user's account, including the Content, "but excluding any tangible medium the Services may be supplied on, are licensed, not sold".[36] They say Virtual Items "have no monetary value, cannot be used outside of the Services", and give Take-Two "the right to modify, delete, move, remove, or suspend any Virtual Items at any time", "with or without notice" & "with no liability of any kind to you".[36]

The terms on Take-Two's website, "Last Updated: February 28, 2025", say Virtual Items "are licensed under the terms of this Agreement" and that nothing in the agreement transfers "any ownership interest or other permanent, perpetual or irrevocable rights" in them.[37] Under those terms, users agree they have "no ownership or other rights in or to any Virtual Items or your Account".[37] The terms say specific services, Virtual Items, content or an account "may be offered or remain available to you for a limited time", and that Take-Two "may modify, alter, or suspend, or sunset, or terminate (whether in whole in part)" any of its Services or Virtual Items "for a valid reason".[37] They also say nothing in them "is intended to limit or exclude your rights under any mandatory consumer laws" in a user's jurisdiction of residence.[37]

The same Steam listing says online & certain special features "require internet connection", "may not be available to all users or at all times" & "may be terminated, modified, or offered under different terms without notice".[12]

In an email statement that Game Informer, a video game magazine, published on April 7, 2015, a 2K representative said that, starting that day, 2K was extending "the support of all NBA 2K servers from 18 to 27 months following each release".[53] The basketball video game community site NLSC (nba-live.com) wrote in August 2020 that in NBA 2K20 "MyCAREER offline is no longer available in any capacity", & that shutting down the NBA 2K20 servers would "render MyCAREER completely unavailable, the same as MyTEAM".[54]

Dexerto also wrote that NBA 2K22, 2K23 & 2K24 "each went dark on December 31, roughly 28 months after launch", & that the NBA 2K25 notice "closely mirrors the wording 2K used for NBA 2K22".[19] Operation Sports, a sports video game site, wrote in October 2025 that the NBA 2K23 servers were shut down in December 2024, "in line with the 27-month lifespan for recent NBA games".[55]

The gaming news site TheSixthAxis reported on January 1, 2024 that NBA 2K22 was no longer for sale & that its online servers "have been switched off permanently".[56] On January 1, 2026 it reported that "all online functionality for NBA 2K24 has been switched off".[57] 2K's NBA 2K24 page says that as of January 1, 2026, "MyCAREER, MyTEAM, earning Virtual Currency (VC), multiplayer, Online Leagues, and community sharing have been disabled".[58]

A general NBA 2K server sunsets page from 2K says any NBA 2K title "released outside our current line up", such as NBA 2K24 & earlier games, has been discontinued & will no longer be available for purchase.[24] On 2K's status page, the online services of NBA 2K26 are listed as "scheduled to be available until 31 December 2027" & those of NBA 2K27 as scheduled until 31 December 2028.[10]

2K's reasons for retiring online services

[edit | edit source]

2K's online services status page, which covers its games in general, says that as new titles are released, players "naturally transition over to our newer titles", & that "as time goes by" running online services for both newer & legacy titles "becomes commercially unfeasible".[10] At that point, the page says, 2K has to make "the difficult choice about where to best dedicate our resources", which "sometimes" means retiring "certain online features for our legacy titles".[10] For "some of our annual and bi-annual titles", the page says, retirement "is scheduled in advance based on historical information", & "these dates may be extended or brought forward".[10]

Eddie Makuch of the video game news site GameSpot wrote in October 2026 that closures like NBA 2K25's are "not uncommon in the world of sports games and beyond" for 2K & other publishers who "shift resources to newer, more popular games over time".[59] He added that for a game like NBA 2K "there could also be licensing and legal requirements", given how many "real-world people and brands appear in the games".[59]

Power To The Players Act announcement

[edit | edit source]

Ritchie Torres, a Democratic congressman who represents New York's 15th congressional district,[60] announced on October 15, 2026 that he "will introduce" the Power To The Players Act, legislation that "would direct the Federal Trade Commission to establish regulations" protecting consumers' "ability to own and play the video games they purchase".[6] According to the release, buying a video game under the bill would give the consumer "ownership of the game rather than a license to play it", and games with online functionality would also be required "to provide an offline mode before the servers supporting them are shut down".[6] Torres's press release named NBA 2K25 as its example:

NBA 2K25 is a clear example. The game, which retailed for $69.99 for the standard edition and $99.99 for the All-Star Edition, will be delisted from digital storefronts on October 30 and will have its online servers shut down on December 31, only two years after its initial release.

[6]

The release said:

No consumer should have a game they paid for pulled out from under them on a company’s arbitrary timeline.

[6]

In the same release, Torres said, "When you pay for a game, you should own it".[6] He also said:

A game that can be taken away the moment a company pulls the plug is not a purchase. It is a rental disguised as a sale.

[6]

Kotaku, a video game website, reported that Torres confirmed he is "not one of the millions who bought NBA 2K25".[60] The technology news site Engadget reported on October 15, 2026 that the bill "hasn't been introduced in Congress yet".[61]

YouTuber Ross Scott set up Stop Killing Games, a group lobbying for new consumer protection laws, in 2024, after Ubisoft announced the shutdown of its online-only racing game The Crew.[62] In its report on the announcement, Engadget wrote that the bill, "at least in spirit", "sounds like it lines up with the Stop Killing Games campaign".[61] Kotaku wrote that the bill's broad strokes "are essentially what many gamers have spent the last year begging for" and that the movement "began with the Stop Killing Games advocacy group".[60]

Lawsuit over NBA 2K virtual currency

[edit | edit source]

Complaint

[edit | edit source]

The class action JA v. 2K Games, Inc. was filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California on November 17, 2023.[63][64] Docketed as No. 3:23-cv-05961, the complaint names 2K Games, Inc. & Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. as defendants & demands a jury trial.[64] It alleges that 2K Games retired NBA 2K21 on December 31, 2022, "just over two years after the game’s release".[63] The complaint also alleges that when 2K Games retires an older version of a game, gamers’ accounts immediately fall to a "zero VC balance the instant the server is disconnected".[63] The complaint says 2K Games "has refused to refund gamers, including children," for unused in-game currency, & its prayer for relief asks for damages & "restitution to the extent permitted by applicable law".[63]

Motion to dismiss

[edit | edit source]

In a motion to dismiss filed on February 2, 2024, the defendants argued that "VC is not Plaintiff’s property: instead, in-game VC are fictions created by game publishers".[65] On September 27, 2024, Judge James Donato granted the motion in part.[64] His text-only order stated:

Overall, plaintiff's complaint plausibly alleges claims under the California Unfair Competition Law, Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code §17200 et seq., and for common law conversion.

[64]

The order dismissed the civil theft claim with leave to amend & gave the plaintiff until October 11, 2024 to file an amended complaint.[64] It added: "Defendants' challenges may be renewed later on a more developed record, as circumstances warrant."[64]

2026 docket entries

[edit | edit source]

On April 28, 2026, Judge Donato put the remaining case deadlines on hold, ordering that they "are stayed pending further order".[66] The docket lists an August 21, 2026 entry described as "Order on Motion to Certify Class AND Order on Motion to Strike AND Status Conference".[66] In a September 21, 2026 Kotaku article, Zack Zwiezen wrote of the lawsuit that "it continues to proceed".[67]
