Roku autoplay ads before home screen

From Consumer Rights Wiki

In March 2025, Roku tested a feature that played a video advertisement before users could reach the Roku OS home screen, so that turning on a Roku TV or streaming device showed an ad, often for the movie Moana 2, before the home screen appeared.[1] Some users found an option to skip the ad, while others reported no clear way to bypass it.[1][2]

The test

[edit | edit source]

Users reported that when turning on a Roku TV or streaming device, they were shown a video advertisement before reaching the home screen.[1][2] A Roku spokesperson confirmed that the auto-playing ads were part of a test but did not say whether they would become permanent, and said the company's business model relies on continuous testing in advertising.[1] The report followed Roku's earlier patent for technology that could overlay ads on third-party devices connected to a Roku TV.[1][2]
