Stop Killing the Internet (SKI) is a global campaign, sister of the Stop Killing Games campaign, that was launched on June 2026. It is intended to spread awareness about the problems of implementing restrictions and legislations that affect the Internet and users' privacy, such as the implementation of privacy-invasive measures, censorship and centralized control, with the justification of online safety and/or protecting the children.[1]
Campaign history
[edit | edit source]With the increasing quantity of anti-privacy legislations around the world since the Online Safety Act took effect, many bills and legislations in many countries will force their citizens to verify their age (usually requiring to submit very sensitive information, such as an ID) in order to access to certain sites and features of the Internet. These practices have caused several concerns, involving privacy, censorship, mass surveillance and freedom of speech.
Petition to UK Parliament
[edit | edit source]The first action taken by the movement was to back a petition in the UK Parliament, to prevent the government to implement a social media ban for users under the age of 16. The petition closed on August 11, 2026, reaching 217,682 signatures and surpassing the requirement of 100,000 signatures to be considered by the Parliament. The petition will be debated on November 8, 2026.
European Citizens Initiative (ECI)
[edit | edit source]On 22 July 2026, Stop Killing the Internet registered the petition "Stop Killing The Internet: No Digital ID & No Age Verification" in the European Citizens Initiative site. On 25 August 2026, the initiative began collecting signatures.
The initiative has the objective to propose the European Commission to propose legislations that ensure practices such as age-assurance systems used in the EU remain voluntary, privacy-preserving and non-discriminatory, minimizing the data collected, and not forcing EU citizens to verify their age to access the internet.
