Additional info: The API policy change did more than "just" lock out third party applications. It also prevents users of VW's own app "We Connect" from logging in if their phones run GraphenOS, LineageOS, other custom ROMS or simply have their bootloader unlocked. No remote access at all for anyone who doesn't let their device be controlled by Google, Apple, and phone manufacturer. This thread is full of reports about the topic: https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/35949-volkswagen-app/87 and I personally found out after buying a used VW ID.3 and found myself unable to log into the app.
