Pros and cons?

I want to know what's the diff between using [[wikipedia:]] and this. I still don't understand why this is necessary 😕 Rudxain (talk) 23:53, 11 May 2026 (UTC)

There is no difference in function. However, I found it to be easier from the standpoint of a casual editor to use a template (with directions included) instead of Wikipedia markup. It also generally gives a cleaner presentation in source editing as oftentimes a second pipe for display is unnecessary (and thus cutting down on the amount of text), whereas using the markup always requires piping for display. Ex: [[wikipedia:Seattle Avionics|Seattle Avionics]] vs {{Wplink|Seattle Avionics}}

It's not all that different from using {{Reflist}} instead of <references /> — Sojourna (talk) 04:34, 13 May 2026 (UTC)

Proposal: Make wplinks distinctive?

I would like to make it different. I think it would benefit users if wikipedia links on CRW were made distinct. Agreement/Disagreement? Maybe it's been done before on other wikis? [Edit: Yup! the parent template this was forked from shows the wikipedia globe]. I propose that the very recognizable Wikipedia W [1] appear next to the link.

Apologies for not responding sooner. While it would be nice to better distinguish Wikipedia links from internal links, I have my concerns about how it would affect the presentation of an article. As it is, the website icon function was never intended for use outside of an external links section (e.g. as seen for Savage Gladiator's Barrier, Fansites#Main_Sites). — Sojourna (talk) 03:05, 17 July 2026 (UTC)

Well, I've made Template:Wplink3 to replace Template:Wplink and folks can look at Template:Wplink2 to see how it would work if we replaced the original. What page uses the template a lot we can edit/make a version of to show what the change would look like in use? I made User:CrookKilla/Forced_arbitration2 to show this; it uses it 3 times and has intrawiki links too. Maybe better with the W after the link? CrookKilla (talk) 22:07, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

It might be smart to pick a different graphic, it can turn into a reading issue if we just used the generic W in light theme. Their globe logo can probably work JamesTDG (talk) 02:11, 12 August 2026 (UTC)

And I just swapped in an even less generic Wikipedia W on a puzzle piece. Also addressed the way it looks on a light theme. Could use globe logos - / but I don't think they look good at the appropriate size. (And | could be used too.) Any objections to how it works now, as seen at User:CrookKilla/Forced_arbitration2?
