  • User privacy: As of 27 August 2026, it is unknown if GTA VI utilizes anti-cheating software. In the past, Rockstar Games has used BattlEye — a kernel-level anti-cheat.

Ultimate Edition required to fully unlock base content (June 2026)

[edit | edit source]

On 24 June 2026, Rockstar Games shared that certain content already included in the base game would be locked behind the "Ultimate Edition".[1][2] This has led to a debate on whether the $80 "Standard Edition" can be considered incomplete,[3] with the developer having made no comment on the matter as of 19 July 2026.

Physical version is just a download code (June 2026)

[edit | edit source]

Contrary to the initial communication from Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnik on 4 February 2026,[4][5] Rockstar Games announced in late June that there would be no discs included for the Grand Theft Auto VI release. Instead, the box would only contain a code for a digital download of the game.[6][7][8] This effectively bore out the online rumors which had been circulating back in February that GTA VI would be digital-only at launch.[5]

In a report from The Hollywood Reporter on 25 June 2026, it was clarified by an inside source that "there are no plans for Grand Theft Auto VI discs to be printed — not at launch, and not months after."[9]

On 7 August 2026, in response to a question during Take-Two Interactive's Q1 2027 financial release, Zelnick defended the decision to have GTA VI be digital-only:

"Our business is well over 90% digitally distributed. It's already a digital business. So in certain instances, especially if it's a big game, discs just — and note I said discs — don't really make sense for the consumer.

Also, most instances you have to register online to play anyhow. So if you're already connected, who cares if you download digitally? It's all the same and it's much more convenient.

So that's where the world is going in our opinion and I think Sony understands that. We certainly understand that. It doesn't mean that we won't have physical additions now and then, I'm sure we will in the same way that there’s still vinyl in the recorded music business. But in other instances, it just won't make sense."[10]

Premiere of first gameplay trailer requires Netflix subscription (August 2026)

[edit | edit source]

On 6 August 2026, Rockstar Games posted on X that "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" would premiere on Netflix on 27 August 2026.[11] Immediately following that, the company also added that the video would be made available six hours later on both on its website and its YouTube channel.[12] Netflix itself called it "a first-of-its-kind partnership",[13] with Brandon Riegg, Vice President of Nonfiction Series, adding:

“Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first. It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”[13]

While it is being made available to everyone else later on the same day, it sets a troubling precedent that the first-ever footage of gameplay — crucial to determining whether to buy a game — is exclusive at all.[14][15]
