Manual-finder subscription sites

As of 31 October 2026, the websites manualsmate.com & manualsguru.com charge 0.95 EUR for a seven-day trial of their manual-finding service, then by default 149.99 EUR to the customer's credit card for every two months,[1][2] & their terms say the trial charge is non-refundable.[3][4] Watchlist Internet, an Austrian warning site,[5] added manualsguru.com & manualsmate.com to its list of subscription traps in February 2024;[6][7] its entries warn that visitors who enter their details there risk an expensive subscription that is hard to cancel.[6][7]
Background
[edit | edit source]Manual-finder sites such as manualsmate.com & manualsguru.com offer to find the instruction manual for a product: both homepages carry the line "Find any instruction manual Now!" and say the site searches its database of manuals for the one the visitor is looking for.[1][2] Each tells visitors "There is no need to look elsewhere for your manual" and describes its "27.000+ Manuals Database" as "one of the largest instruction manual and user guide databases".[1][2] Requests go through a form at the top of the page that asks for the make, model & an email address; once a manual is located, the homepage says, it will be emailed in .pdf format "within 24 business working hours".[1][2]
The terms and conditions on manualsmate.com say the search is carried out on the site's own internal database, on "any public information we can find freely available on the internet" and by contacting the manufacturer directly "where applicable".[3] The same terms say the site cannot guarantee it will always find the manual requested, or the accuracy of its results.[3]
The German regional news site leinetal24 advised readers to look for instruction manuals directly on manufacturers' official support pages, writing that "Viele Unternehmen bieten ihre Handbücher dort kostenlos an" (in English, many companies offer their manuals there free of charge).[8] The printer maker Canon publishes its own online manual for the TS3300 series of its PIXMA printers; the manual lists the TS3350 among its models and has sections on printing, copying & scanning.[9]
Trial price and automatic renewal
[edit | edit source]Four-sentence block on three homepages
[edit | edit source]As of 31 October 2026, the homepages of manualsmate.com, manualsguru.com & a third site, manualslink.com, print the same four sentences, word for word, on price, renewal & cancellation.[1][2][10] On manualsmate.com they sit under the heading "Benefits of our Premium service".[1] The first three read:
7 days discovery offer at 0.95 EUR with an unlimited number of requests. Your subscription to our service is configured by default to be renewed automatically at the end of your discovery period for a period of 2 months, with tacit renewal. Your bi-monthly subscription is charged 149.99 EUR and your credit card will be debited with this amount.
All three sites' terms pages say that after the seven-day "discovery offer period" the customer "will be charged on a bi-monthly basis".[3][4][11] The manualsmate.com terms add that the customer "will be billed at the rate advertised on the Website at time of sign-up" & that "Subscriptions will automatically be renewed upon expiration".[3] Charging of the subscription fee & "any applicable taxes and fees" starts "on the day that the trial period expires", unless the customer has cancelled the subscription "correctly in accordance with these terms and conditions".[3]

Renewal prices in archived copies
[edit | edit source]The Wayback Machine, a digital archive that saves dated copies of web pages, holds earlier copies of the manualsmate.com & manualsguru.com homepages, in which the block gives these renewal prices & periods:[12][13]
| Archived copy | Site | Renewal price | Period as printed |
|---|---|---|---|
| as of 27 January 2022 | manualsmate.com (page in Italian) | 24.95 EUR | "1 mesi"; "abbonamento mensile" (Italian: one month; monthly subscription)[12] |
| as of 5 March 2022 | manualsguru.com | 24.95 EUR | "2 months"; "bi-monthly"[13] |
| as of 12 August 2022 | manualsmate.com | 49.90 EUR | "1 months"; "monthly"[14] |
| as of 22 May 2024 | manualsmate.com | 69.95 EUR | "1 months"; "monthly"[15] |

| as of 26 March 2025 | manualsguru.com | 149.99 EUR | "bi-monthly"[20] |
As of 28 February 2024, the manualsmate.com terms said that after the seven days the customer would be charged "on a monthly basis",[21] where the terms as of 31 October 2026 say "on a bi-monthly basis".[3] Both versions print the same "Last updated" date, 18 May 2021, as do the terms pages of manualsguru.com & manualslink.com.[21][3][4][11]
Cancellation and refunds
[edit | edit source]
The terms of manualsmate.com & manualsguru.com say a customer can cancel at any time.[3][4] They list selecting "Manage My Subscription" on the homepage or logging in to an account, contacting customer services through the website, emailing, or calling.[3][4] On both sites, that link opens a login page asking for "the email you signed up with and the password which was sent to your email".[23][24] For email & phone, the manualsmate.com terms give [email protected] & +44 (0) 20 4586 9600;[3] the manualsguru.com terms give [email protected] & +49 811 88998189.[4]
The manualsmate.com & manualsguru.com homepages follow the 149.99 EUR renewal charge with a sentence saying a subscriber can switch off the automatic renewal, & so end the subscription, "at any time during its entire term".[1][2] The same sentence says "this request will take effect at the end of your current subscription period".[1][2] Under both sets of terms, a cancellation request received after the renewal date leaves the subscription active "until the expiry date of the current subscription period".[3][4]
A customer who decides within the first 30 days that the service is not what they expected or as advertised may contact the site for a full refund of any charges incurred, according to both sets of terms.[3][4] Two sentences later, the terms say:
You may only be entitled to a refund if you have not used the service - please note that the charge for the trial period is non-refundable.
Both sets of terms say that if the site carries out a search & fails to find the manual, the customer may be charged the site's service fee for the search.[3][4] In October 2025, leinetal24 wrote that amounts already paid can often be recovered through the chargeback procedure for credit cards.[8] The same terms say that once a chargeback has been raised, the customer is "no longer entitled to any refund from customer services".[3][4]
Consumer warnings
[edit | edit source]Watchlist Internet
[edit | edit source]Watchlist Internet describes itself as an "information platform on internet fraud and fraud-like online traps from Austria".[5] Its legal notice names the Österreichisches Institut für angewandte Telekommunikation, a non-profit association, as the site's media owner & publisher.[25]
Watchlist checked & entered manualsguru.com in its list of "Abo-Fallen", German for subscription traps, on 26 February 2024,[6] & manualsmate.com on 29 February 2024.[7] The UK's Advertising Standards Authority wrote in November 2017 that when a consumer unknowingly agrees to make ongoing payments because an ad they responded to did not include significant conditions, or those conditions were not clear, the situation has been described as a "subscription trap".[26]
Both entries carry the same text, which says that anyone who enters their details on the site runs the risk of falling into an expensive subscription trap that is hard to cancel, because information about the actual costs is either well hidden or not shown at all.[6][7] Each entry's page title begins with "Betrug!", the German word for fraud.[6][7] The entries advise anyone caught to cancel by telling the company that no valid contract came about, & then to ask their credit card issuer for a refund, since the company usually does not answer.[6][7]
Watchlist's article of 6 October 2025 warned that many offers that look good at first glance end in a subscription trap when someone searches online for a manual, & examined manualsmate.com as a concrete example.[27] Watchlist wrote that the site returns results even when a search uses placeholders in place of product or brand names: its search for the device "Platzhalter 2" of the brand "Platzhalter 1" (German for placeholder 2 & placeholder 1) produced a result, with the manual offered for download for a minimal fee of 0.95 pounds ("0,95 Pfund").[27] A blurred graphic beside the payment form is meant to confirm the find, Watchlist wrote.[27]
According to Watchlist, a buyer gets nothing for the money, even if they had searched for a real manual, & complaints received by its editors confirmed the "Betrug".[27] The payment does bring an unwanted subscription, it wrote; that is stated in the small print & the terms of use, but European Union (EU) directives for online retail are "ganz klar nicht eingehalten" (clearly not complied with).[27]
In Watchlist's view, no valid purchase contract comes into being because the relevant directives are not complied with, so anyone caught in a subscription trap does not have to pay anything.[27] It wrote that the offer is aimed at EU citizens as well.[27] Watchlist's legal notice says the information on its website is not legal advice.[25]
Watchlist added that the alleged database could also be reached at the domain manualsmate.help, & that Manualsmate is not the only "betrügerische" (fraudulent) provider of manuals, naming manuals-help.com as another example.[27] For anyone already caught, Watchlist advised asking the credit card provider to block the charges, wrote that debits already taken can be reclaimed, & advised cancelling with the company in writing & objecting in writing to any debt-collection letters.[27]
Reports by leinetal24, Mimikama and dpa
[edit | edit source]On 15 October 2025, leinetal24 reported Watchlist's warning that many sites lure people looking for manuals with supposedly cheap or free offers, often hiding subscription traps, & named manualsmate.com, which offers manuals "für Centbeträge" (for cent amounts), as a typical example.[8] The article said that behind some of these offers is a "perfide Abzockmasche" (devious rip-off scheme) that draws consumers into expensive subscription traps.[8] It also stated that under "§ 312j Abs. 4 BGB" a contract counts as not concluded if it was not clear that there was an obligation to pay, & that consumers should contest the contract in writing & withdraw from it as a precaution.[8]
Mimikama, an Austrian association for education about internet misuse, published an article by Hilde Ollig on 7 October 2025 that names the Watchlist article as its source.[28] Mimikama wrote that manualsmate.com, for example, advertises a huge database & quick solutions, but that a user in fact gets only an invoice for a subscription they never wanted.[28] It named manualsmate.com, manualsmate.help & manuals-help.com, writing that the site delivers prefabricated search results regardless of what is entered.[28]
In Mimikama's view the small print does state that the purchase is a subscription, but "gut versteckt und juristisch fragwürdig" (well hidden and legally questionable), because under EU law it must be clear that a contract is a paid one, which Mimikama wrote was not the case here.[28] Mimikama also wrote that the provider breaches EU consumer-protection rules while deliberately targeting European users.[28] A note on the page says parts of the article may have been produced with artificial intelligence assistance & checked by the editors.[28]
On 7 October 2025 the Mindener Tageblatt, a German newspaper, & the news site NWZonline published the same story, which NWZonline's copy credits to the German news agency dpa ("dpa/tmn").[29][30] It relayed Watchlist's warning that anyone who uses a search engine to find a manual risks landing on dubious sites where they can fall into phishing or subscription traps.[29] The story said that some sites pose as databases of instruction manuals & supposedly offer the manual for download for cent amounts, & that entering payment details on them may mean unknowingly taking out a subscription.[29]
Google ad records
[edit | edit source]
As of 31 October 2026, Google's Ads Transparency Center, a search page for ads "by advertiser name or website", lists 51 ads pointing to manualslink.com[32] & 51 pointing to manualsmate.com, with its date filter set to "Any time".[33] Both domain pages say the domain "includes results for multiple advertiser accounts with ads pointing to this domain".[32][33] The ad cards shown for both domains read "Bodmin Limited" & "Verified".[32][33] The Ads Transparency Center page for that advertiser gives its "Legal name" as Bodmin Limited, based in the United Kingdom, with the line "Advertiser has verified their identity" & a count of "~200 ads".[31]
