Tapas shutdown and loss of purchased content

Readers who paid real money to unlock Tapas comics will lose them when South Korean media company Kakao Entertainment closes Tapas on March 31, 2027, with no refund & no copy they can keep.[2][3][4][5][6] Tapas hosts webtoons, comics made to be read on a phone by scrolling down,[7] such as Solo Leveling;[8] readers unlock episodes with Ink, the platform's virtual currency.[9][2][3]
Until October 1, 2026, readers bought Ink in packs with real money, by credit card or PayPal on the website or through Apple or Google in the apps, or earned some free by watching video ads or completing offers.[9][4][5][1][3] Tapas says all Ink transactions are "final and non-refundable" & that unlocked content cannot be transferred to KakaoPage & KakaoWebtoon, Kakao's webtoon & novel platforms in South Korea, or any other Kakao service.[3][10][2]
Background
[edit | edit source]Entrepreneurs Chang Kim & Young-Jun Jang launched Tapas in 2012 under the name Comic Panda.[7] Kakao Entertainment acquired Tapas & Radish in 2021, & the two merged into Tapas Entertainment in 2022; Radish was a platform for prose stories written by its users.[2][7] In September 2026, the comics news site The Beat, citing data released by Tapas Entertainment, reported that Tapas alone had 75,000 creators, 100,000 titles, & 10 million cumulative registered users.[7]
Terms for unlocked episodes and Ink
[edit | edit source]Asked whether readers will still be able to read content they have unlocked after March 31, 2027, the Tapas End of Service FAQ answers:
No. After the end of service on March 31, 2027, you will no longer be able to access Tapas, including any previously unlocked content.
The FAQ, dated September 30, 2026 & last updated October 1, lists March 31, 2027 at 23:59 Pacific Time as the last day to use Ink, to unlock episodes, & to access content, & as the end of the service.[3] As of its October 1 update, the FAQ says Tapas has no plans for additional sales or events before the end of service & that content prices "will remain unchanged".[3]
On refunds for Ink or unlocked content, the FAQ says the no-refund rule is stated in the Tapas Refund Policy.[3] Readers can request a copy of their account & personal data by emailing Tapas.[3]
The Refund Policy on the Tapas help site states that "unlocked episodes cannot be returned or exchanged" & that in-app purchases on Tapas are "generally considered final".[11] It describes a "no-refund policy" that Tapas may modify case by case in "special circumstances in which a refund or some sort of adjustment is warranted".[11] The policy says Google processes transactions on Android devices & Apple processes them on iOS devices, & that for a problem with a purchase or payment "both companies have support systems to handle refund requests"; it directs PayPal buyers to email Tapas with a copy of their order receipt.[11]
Tapas's help center says unlocked episodes can be downloaded for offline reading in the app, but downloads are "automatically removed from your device after 30 days" & are "only intended for reading within Tapas".[6]
Shutdown announcement
[edit | edit source]Kakao Entertainment announced on September 22, 2026 that it planned to shut down Tapas.[2] The Chosun Daily, a South Korean newspaper, reported on September 22, 2026 that Kakao Entertainment was "pushing to terminate its webtoon platform Tapas" in North America while merging its two domestic services, KakaoPage & KakaoWebtoon, into a single platform under KakaoPage by the end of the year.[10] The Beat, citing content industry sources, reported that Kakao Entertainment planned to send advance notices of the Tapas termination to publishers & rights holders that day.[7] Tapas posted its End of Service Notice for users on October 1, 2026.[1] According to the entertainment news site CBR, Tapas's "various contracted webtoon and webnovel authors" learned of the shutdown alongside the general public.[4]
On September 22, the Kakao Labor Union said that the company had insufficiently communicated to employees its explanations of the Tapas closure process, financial losses, employee relocation, voluntary retirement, user refunds, & the protection of content & data.[10] The union demanded transparency on those issues.[10]
The news site ICv2 reported on September 22, 2026 that Reddit users had noticed a few weeks earlier that Tapas had ended its promotions on Ink & removed gift episodes, free episodes that Tapas placed in readers' in-app Gift Box.[8][9]
Kakao Entertainment closed Radish, its English-language platform in the United States, in 2025.[2][7][12] In July 2025, a Kakao Entertainment spokesperson said the Radish closure was part of a broader effort to "refocus global strategy" by consolidating operations & strengthening Tapas as the core platform in North America.[12]
Press coverage of the end-of-service terms
[edit | edit source]On October 1, 2026, Wonhee Cho of the anime & manga news site Anime News Network contrasted Tapas with "some digital platforms that allow users to retain purchased content after a service closes".[2]
