Wiki language code

From what I can ascertain, MediaWiki makes no distinction between Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. This is consistent with none being made for English and American English.

So for the |lang= (or |language=) field in a citation, it would just be |lang=pt. You can refer to the List of ISO 639 language codes on Wikipedia to see what is supported.

Thank you, that explains exactly what I saw.

I had written the language out by name, and it produced a category that does not exist here: Category:CS1 português do Brasil-language sources (pt-br) is a red link, which is why I removed the parameter instead of fixing it. With |lang=pt the category is Category:CS1 português-language sources (pt), which does exist, so that is what I have used.

Two suggestions for the maintainers, both about categories rather than codes.

The article cites a Russian-language Sony support page, and Category:CS1 русский-language sources (ru) does not exist yet, so I left that citation untagged rather than create a red link. It would be worth creating.

I would also suggest creating the pt-br one. The citation module already accepts the code and already renders its own name for it, português do Brasil, so the distinction is supported here; only the category page is missing. And the distinction is real: Brazilian and European Portuguese differ in vocabulary and spelling to the point where the same sentence is often written differently in each, closer to the distance between Norwegian bokmål and nynorsk, which this wiki does keep apart, than to the one between British and American English.

For this wiki there is also a practical reason. A Sony Brasil support page and a Sony Portugal one are not interchangeable sources: they describe different regional products, different support policies and different consumer-protection regimes. On a consumer-rights wiki, that is worth being able to see at a glance.

Thank you for clarifying and explaining. It looks like another user has since already gone through and created a bunch of CS1 categories for various languages, including Brazilian Portuguese and Russian. You shouldn't encounter any more issues.

Thank you, and thanks to whoever created the categories. Brazilian and European Portuguese really are different sources on a page like this, so it's good to see the distinction kept.

Now, that Russian category still is not created... but I've tagged that citation with lang=ru, so every non-English source on the page now carries its code. Waiting on the user liberation to act more leveraging the API.
