Revision as of 22:43, 23 January 2026
This project aims to get as many reference links as possible on the wiki switched over to archival links, instead of live links.
The need to fight link rot
Everywhere on the internet, you get link rot - where linked pages either get taken offline, or changed, and the link is no longer useful for its original purpose. Link rot is a doubly serious issue for the Consumer Rights Wiki, as fairly substantial points of fact about companies or incidents may hang on our references, which will often point to a company's own website. The best available way to counter link rot is through archival, and this page serves as a hub for making sure every wiki article has its references archived.
Of particular importance are any links to central pieces of evidence used to support a claim of fact related to something a company has said or done, especially if it is on the website of a company, and can be taken down by them at any time. A reference supporting a more commonly available and frequently changing fact like 'Apple's market cap is $x' is not as important to archive as a company's FAQ, but it certainly won't hurt to do so.
Certain webpages are un-usable when archived, typically due to paywalls or embedded dynamic content, and archival may not be appropriate for links leading to this kind of page. Some webpages require the use of a specific archival service (e.g. PreserveTube for YouTube links)
What you need to do
The best possible option is to archive a site in as many places as possible, but any archival link is much better than none at all.
The correct formatting for an archived citation will look something like this:
{{Cite web |author=BwE |title=BwE PS4 NOR Validator & BwE SerialReader Script by BetterWayElectronics |url=https://www.psxhax.com/threads/bwe-ps4-nor-validator-bwe-serialreader-script-by-betterwayelectronics.6139/ |website=PSHAX |date=27 Nov 2018 |access-date=12 Nov 2025 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250408175450/https://www.psxhax.com/threads/bwe-ps4-nor-validator-bwe-serialreader-script-by-betterwayelectronics.6139/ |archive-date=8 Apr 2025}}
The full list of possible fields can be found here: Template:Cite web. All you need to do is archive the relevant un-archived webpage (or find an archived copy closer to the date the reference initially accessed it), and then update the reference with the archival link.
This can either be done through the source editor (in which case citations will look like the text block above) or through the visual editor's citation tool (this can be found by clicking Insert -> More... -> Citation, or pressing crtl+shift+k).
Known archival services
- Internet Archive
- Archive.today
- Ghost Archive
- PreserveTube
- Screenshots/files hosted on Consumer Rights Wiki
The list
Below is a table of all pages on the wiki, and the current status of their references.
Pages that are missing a references section or have an empty references section are listed as "N/A" as they either do not have links that need archiving, or if they do then those links need to be correctly moved to the references section and/or the page completed/cleaned/reformatted before adding archived links, which is beyond the scope of this project (See Category:Articles in need of additional work). This may change if references are properly added to these pages in the future.
